Feeling Lost? Why It’s a Good Thing and How to Navigate Your Way Again

Feeling lost? Why it's a good thing and how to navigate our way

Have you had one of those days (or maybe you’re currently feeling this way) where you just feel unmotivated, feel a little lost, as though you might be drifting aimlessly in life?

If you are currently feeling this way, don’t worry, it is absolutely normal and most people feel the same way from time to time, just at varying degrees. Before I share with you what her response was, where she shared some her own personal experiences, let’s explore first why we may be feeling lost, what does these all mean. Now, I don’t propose to solve your problems but I wanted to share our own experiences, the lessons we’ve learned that have helped us navigate our way again? And hopefully it can shed a glimmer of light for you too, so stick with me till the end of the video to hear her story.

Why do we feel lost?

There are many reasons…

  • If you’re in your 20’s, maybe you’re finishing school, entering the workforce and trying to establish your independence as an adult in the world but no clue what to do with your life yet?
  • If you’re in your 30’s or 40’s, maybe you just realised that you have been conducting life, whether it’s your job, or your relationship, based on what you think society’s expectations are and lost sight of what you really want?

What does this mean?

Feeling lost is almost inevitable at some point, where it’s either we seek change to grow or things just suddenly happen in life, like a job or a relationship loss, forcing us to face the unknown.

So, it is actually a good thing to feel lost sometimes because as humans, we are constantly growing and evolving through phases in life. It’s almost like the universe trying to kick you in the butt giving you signs that you may going off-course, so you can stop, reassess and make pivots.

Here, as promised earlier one of my good friends shared her experience and what her thoughts are on feeling lost…

How do we navigate and find our way again?

1.Gain clarity

“Tension is who you think you should be. Relaxation is who you are.”

– Chinese Proverb

It is too often we find ourselves living our lives to what we think the expectations and standards of society are for us. The longer we live on autopilot, the further we are away from our true self.

The first step is to gain clarity to your own values. Check in with yourself ask yourself these questions :-

  • What did I spend my time doing as a kid, what have I always been into?
  • What kind of environment, what kind of people, or what activity energizes me or makes me feel at peace most?
  • If money was not an issue, what would I want to spend my time doing?
  • What have I been avoiding that needs to change?
2. Try New Things

When you try new things, it will eliminate your doubts and help you discover other interest, skills or talents you never knew you had. So, don’t loose your childlike sense of wonder. Go explore and reawaken your curiosity – maybe volunteer at a cause of your interest, travel solo back-packing, try that martial art class or dance class, start that business or side hustle you’ve been tinkering, or maybe update your resume and send it out to another job or industry you might be thinking of switching.

Life is too short not to try new things. The world is a fascinating place. Just take small baby brave steps, one day at a time and soon, I promise you, you will look back and realised how this was a blessing in disguise and you will see how far you’ve come.

The truth is, no one has it all figured out. Don’t let what you see on social media make you think otherwise. Most of the time, people only share the highlights anyway. Know that we are all in this together. Be kind to yourself, feeling lost is a good thing to ignite your spirit again. Remind yourself right now is exactly where you are meant to be and like Ekhart Tolle said, “This moment right now is all you need to evolve your consciousness” and like a story book, you might just be one page-turn away that this moment in your life connects to a bigger story.
